Native Arts ArtWalk
Thursday, March 1, 7-9pm
Native American tradition will mesh with contemporary artistic flair in Scottsdale on Thursday, March 1 from 7 to 9 pm. That’s when the Scottsdale Gallery Association presents its 2nd annual Native Arts ArtWalk, sponsored in part by Western Art Collector magazine and the City of Scottsdale.
Held just prior to each year’s huge weekend festival at the Heard Museum, the Native Arts ArtWalk is an intimate stroll among dozens of great galleries, several of which feature indigenous artists’ work or scenes depicting southwestern Indian culture. Indeed, there has been a long association between the Scottsdale Arts District’s galleries and some of the most superb Indian art to come out of Arizona.
Among the famed private galleries showing original Indian art during the event will be River Trading Post, Blue Rain Contemporary, Bonner David Gallery, May Gallery and others. In addition to presenting several artist demonstrations, River Trading Post will also be hosting Hopi drum group Clan Spirit as well as the acclaimed frybread of Ashley-Yellowman Frybread (a portion of proceeds will benefit the SGA Art Education Fund).
Out on the streets, there will be some great music by the likes of: Grammy-nominated William Eaton with Mary Redhouse; Nammy-nominated flute player Kelvin Mockingbird, South American indigenous music from Cesar Cotacachi of Andes Cosmos, and others. Additional artist demonstrations will be provided by participants from the Hopi Education Endowment Fund and also by Royce Manuel from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, who will have with him the tribe’s original “talking stick” as well as other fascinating artifacts.
The Scottsdale Gallery Association’s new YEA! – Young & Emerging Artists program will feature hot java from Shine Coffee and pastry sales from Torched Goodness bakery at the northwest corner of Main Street & Marshall Way near the famed “Jackknife” statue. Sales of treats help raise funds for YEA! and the nonprofit SGA’s Arts Education Fund. Still-hungry ArtWalkers can check at the event information table for a list of some fantastic nearby eateries the SGA has designated “ArtWalk’s Recommended Restaurants.”
The Scottsdale Arts District can be found just west of Scottsdale Road and Indian School Road along Main Street and on Marshall Way north of Indian School Road to Fifth Avenue. There are plenty of nearby free parking areas, and easy access to local hotels or famed Scottsdale eateries. ArtWalkers will have the advantage of hitching a ride on free Scottsdale Trolleys or aboard horse-drawn carriages between Main Street and Marshall Way.
