| Local Interior Design Studio Brings The Only Outside Skating Rink to Scottsdale
Palavela Home Brings Icy Fun to the Valley of the Sun to Benefit Local Charities
Palavela Home, a local interior design store created by former ice skating Olympian Ryan O’Meara, is bringing a skating rink outside of their doors in downtown Scottsdale this December. The 30x40 square foot skating rink, which can accommodate 40 people at a time, will sit outside of Palavela Home starting Thursday, December 2 and will stay open to the public through December 31, although the rink will be closed December 23-25. The cost will be $15 per person which includes a 45 minute skating session and skate rentals.
Each week, Palavela Home will donate 15% of the monies raised to their respective non-profits. Each organization will also receive a free three hour skating session for their supporters during their week.
December 2-8: Homeward Bound
December 9-15: Southwest Center for HIV and AIDS
December 16-22: ALS Association of Arizona
Palavela Home is also bringing in professional and amateur ice shows to the rink for onlookers to watch for free. Skating shows will include skaters from the Ice Den, performing each Thursday evening in December during the Art Walk and also each Saturday in December during the afternoon hours. Onlookers can expect to see local skaters, group numbers and solo skating. Palavela Home owner Ryan O’Meara will also be performing with his skating partner Emily Nussear for a special show.
O’Meara, realized the need for a fun outdoor activity to bring families and friends together. “I am excited to share my enthusiasm for skating with the Valley community,” says O’Meara. “It’s such a great way for families to spend time together while supporting great local causes.”
The only outside skating rink in Phoenix is made of synthetic ice which is a “greener” choice for the Valley of the Sun. The synthetic ice surface allows the skate blades to glide as smoothly as they do on real ice, but without the cost of refrigeration or maintenance.
About Palavela Home: The local design studio is based in Scottsdale, Arizona. Not only can customers walk through the 8,000 sq. ft. of showroom, owners Sue and Ryan O’Meara are both knowledgeable in interior design. Palavela Home is named after the arena Ryan skated at in Torino, Italy for the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Scottsdale Galleries Join Together For Annual Drawing Event
Second Annual Scottsdale Drawing Event – October, 2009
Show Opening: Thursday, October 14th, 7 - 9 PM (show dates vary by gallery)
This month, five of Scottsdale’s finest galleries have joined together for this multiple gallery Drawing Event. Orchestrated by Beth Lauterbach, owner of Scottsdale Fine Art, this Second Annual Drawing Event has already drawn attention to the Arts District. Lauterbach states, “Our clients are looking forward to seeing this remarkable art form here for a second year. There is something seductive about this largely black and white medium. Drawings give viewers opportunity to view the foundation skills essential to all artists as they develop ideas creating a close connection between the viewer and artist”. In addition to Scottsdale Fine Art, the other participating galleries in this year’s event are Duley-Jones Gallery, Gallery Russia, Joan Cawley Gallery and Legacy Gallery. Scott Jones of Legacy is excited that the gallery has joined this year. “There is so much great art out the re that isn’t seen. I think this is a wonderful opportunity for us to bring yet another tremendous medium to our viewing audience.
Most of the artists whose drawings are included in the shows are primarily known for their masterful paintings. A few, however, choose drawing as their primary art form. Artist Russell Crocker represented by Duley-Jones Gallery and Michael Swearngin of Joan Cawley Gallery are two such artists. Participating artists from Scottsdale Fine Art include gallery artists Allen Garns, Michael Maczuga and Jay Davenport as well as an apprentice of Davenport’s and guest artist Timothy Jahn along with three of Jahn’s apprentices. While last year Gallery Russia’s offerings were of deceased Soviet Era artists, this year they will feature a number of living artists including Regina Lyubovnaya, Marci Oleszkiewicz, Stan Prokopenko and Kevin Bielfuss. Legacy Gallery has joined the event this year with drawings by more than 20 artists, both existing gallery artists and guest artists.
As a supplement to this Second Annual Scottsdale Drawing Event, the galleries have created a soft cover book commemorating the show with images from each of the five galleries. This 64 page booklet will be for sale at each of the participating galleries at a cost of $12.95.
October is the official “kick off” for the Gallery District season here in Scottsdale. Each year the City of Scottsdale co-sponsors a special Art Walk to coincide with the Cowboy Artists of America event at the Phoenix Art Museum. Many galleries in the district carry artwork that is not cowboy genre which is why we came together for this exciting event. Scottsdale Fine Art organized the Drawing Event to create new interest for both new and seasoned collectors alike. Local art lovers and visitors from across the country come to the Scottsdale Arts District to enjoy the variety of artwork. A special event like the Western Art Walk on October 14th makes the stroll through the galleries even more enjoyable.

Congressman Harry Mitchell visits the Arts District to Promote Local Business
As our Valley’s weather warms up and Scottsdale blossoms into balmy beauty, nonprofit Local First Arizona has created a brand new version of its handy Small Wonders Map to provide Scottsdale tourists and locals alike with authentic shopping and dining experiences.
To celebrate the launch, Local First Arizona will hold a press conference with Congressman Harry Mitchell, Scottsdale Gallery Association President Kathy Duley and Local First Arizona Executive Director Kimber Lanning. The press conference will take place at 11am on Thursday, February18 at Calvin Charles Gallery (4201 N. Marshall Way) and will focus on the importance of locally owned businesses & unique art scene in the city of Scottsdale. That evening, from 7-9pm, the public is invited to join Rep. Mitchell as he “ArtWalks The Line” through the Scottsdale Arts District and makes pit stops at nearby Local First member businesses including Cowboy Ciao, Artspace, Paper Place, Café Forte, Sugar Bowl and the Shops at the Mix. For more details on the ArtWalk, please visit www.ScottsdaleGalleries.com.
The Scottsdale Small Wonders Map features 30 locally owned, independent businesses in downtown Scottsdale. “For every $1 dollar spent at a local business, 45 cents stays in the local economy – compared to just 13 cents out of a dollar spent at a chain restaurant or big box retailer,” explains Local First executive director Kimber Lanning. “Independent businesses raise the standard of living in our community by using their profits to buy products and services from other local businesses, thus creating more and more tax revenues needed for the community to thrive. These businesses provide meaningful service with a personal touch. It matters to them that you are satisfied and will come back again.”
The Scottsdale Small Wonders map will be distributed in hotels and resorts, retail establishments, through realtors and at various events around town. Previous editions have been created in Phoenix and Tempe and have been extremely successful in promoting and drawing attention to the unique retail & dining establishments in both cities. Pick up your own Scottsdale Small Wonders Map today! For more information, please visit www.localfirstaz.com.

Sunrise Bank of Arizona’s Support
Program for Scottsdale Arts District
Sunrise bank has started
an unprecedented “give back” program to support the arts
— In conjunction with Meridian Payment Systems, Sunrise Bank of
Arizona is preparing to launch a unique private sector program that
will provide recurring income for the Scottsdale Arts District and its
public arts programs in Downtown Scottsdale.
How it works — Sunrise Bank’s cause-related merchant card
services program will “give back” funds from its total credit
card sales generated by participating merchants within the Scottsdale
Arts District, collecting those funds in an account earmarked for Arts
District projects. To bring the program out of the gate at top speed,
Sunrise has offered to set up its credit card system at no charge for
participating merchants or will perform free conversions of existing
credit card systems. In addition, Sunrise will provide ongoing credit
card services at the lowest rates available in the market.
Launch date — Tentative launch date for the merchant card services
program in the Scottsdale Arts District is July 1, 2008.
Participants in the Arts District — The Scottsdale Arts District
boasts a world-famous concentration of private art galleries as well
as restaurants, hotels and many other merchants. It is home to the Scottsdale
Gallery Association (SGA) and its 33-year tradition Scottsdale ArtWalk.
The SGA has officially endorsed Sunrise Bank’s new program and
will administer any funds raised. The surrounding vicinity also includes
the Old Town district, the Buckboard/3rd Ave district, and other areas,
which may also participate in the Sunrise program.
Potential annual contributions to the arts — City records reflect
up to $290 million of annual merchant card activity in Scottsdale’s
downtown districts alone. Sunrise Bank and Meridian Payment Systems
have a goal of contributing up to $500 per each $1 million in merchant
services activity. It is hoped that the program may return more than
$50,000 in annual income for the Scottsdale Gallery Association to promote
Downtown arts, stage events and contribute to schools through its SGA
Arts Education Fund.
Future rollout — Sunrise Bank hopes to develop additional community-based
“give back” programs in a similar manner, but will initially
focus all of its efforts on making the Scottsdale Arts District program
a success…and a thriving prototype for the future.
